How to Meditate : Do's
and don'ts in Meditation
After knowing what is meditation and its benefits, the next question is how to meditate.
There in only one basic rule for meditating :-
"Just
do anything which reveals your real identity (self) to you
and you will be in meditation"
And
when I say 'anything', I mean it.
Just
about
anything
that makes you aware of your true identify
(that of your self ) is a meditation technique.
And there are no hard and fast rules of what can be termed
as meditation techniques and what can not.
meditation can be as easy as
follows:
Sit quietly in a comfortable place (in any comfortable position you want). Now
speak (or say quietly ) in your mind:
"
Dear God, you are
everywhere because you are the sum total of this whole consciousness
pervading in the universe. So whatever has happened, whatever is happening and whatever will happen, everything is
in accordance with your supreme wish. There is nothing in the past, present or in future that can happen without your consent because everything that happens at any point of time is just
the play of supreme consciousness which is you. So I bow to you. I seek refuge in you. I accept everything
that you desire for me be it good or bad."
Now after saying this just sit silently and surrender yourself to this existence. Let everything happens on its own. If thoughts come let them come, if tears come let them flow, if laughing comes let it come. Don't interfere in whatever is happening. Suddenly you will realize that there is someone in you who is beyond thoughts, emotions, feelings, pain, ecstasy, joy and sorrow. Someone who is watching everything that is going on. This knower is self.
Congratulation, you have meditated successfully. |
Yes ! meditation can be as easy as above.
Always remember that all meditation techniques are nothing but the
methods through which our true self is revealed to us.
The technique explained above, though very easy and powerful,
will not work for everyone. Not everybody is prepared to enter into meditation so easily.
Thankfully, we are fortunate to have with us the well laid down spiritual path of many traditions. There have been many meditation techniques developed and perfected over centuries by countless seekers. There are techniques for just about every type of individuals. With the help of those techniques we can easily meditate.
In the
Meditation techniques
I have attempted to explain many of such easy and powerful techniques.
But before we start meditation.....
.......
Here are some
do's and
don'ts in meditation
(1) Meditate regularly :
For deriving some real benefits from meditation, you should meditate regularly. Make
a routine for meditation and stick to it. Someone has said,"
Finding time for something valuable is not that difficult. It only
require a reshuffle of our priorities"
In the list of your priorities
can there be a place for this life changing journey of meditation?
If yes, you can find time for meditation.
If not, then make a place for meditation in your priorities list.
(2) Meditate on the same place and same time everyday:
Though it is not always easy to do this, yet you should try to meditate on the same place everyday. Now this place may be a separate room, or the same chair ,same car, same bus or the same train. When we meditate on the same place everyday, that place get filled with positive vibrations. These positive vibrations helps us in entering into meditative state quickly. The same hold true for timing. Try to meditate at the same time everyday. Now this time may be during your morning workout, or at your breakfast, lunch, evening tea or dinner. Or it may be the time you spent during traffic jams, during waiting for someone in the market or during your prayer session or while performing any particular activity. The key is to meditate at the same time everyday.
(3) For all extremely busy
people:
Adopt the
following three yogic aids of meditation
-
(a)
Deep breathing:
Make a habit of deep breathing. This will keep you
energetic the
whole day.
Do you know this fact ?
| To
function properly, our brain needs three times more oxygen than
the rest of our organs; and unless this is provided it will try
to appropriate its supply by drawing on the over-all allotment ! |
That's why most of
us, the city dwellers involved in sedentary occupations, always remains
in a state of exhaustion, tend to become
dilapidated and have greater susceptibility to germ and infections than
persons who lead active outdoor lives. Sedentary individuals are
permanently oxygen-starved. Adopt a habit of deep breathing and you will
never be oxygen starved.
(b) Deep relaxation:
Learn deep relaxation- the great art of yoga which
will provide the ability of hibernating any time anywhere and restore your energy instantly.
(c) Deep Contraction:
Do some physical exercise daily. The best thing is to learn some yogic contraction exercises. A regular practice of yoga will make your body flexible, fit and agile. Remember that a healthy mind reside in a healthy body and a
healthy mind in a health body is the ideal condition for
spiritual
development.
(4) Have patience :
Meditation acts as a cleansing process. It will take its
own time to produce its effect on you. Be patient and don't meditate with an aim of getting a time-bound
benefit. Meditate without expecting anything. Soon you will find that
the joy that comes through meditation is enough.
(5) Always remember this fact
:
In whichever meditation technique you are, you aim should be to identify the witness within you, which is the real aim of meditation. In fact all meditation techniques helps you to identify that witness within you.
This is the real
key factor of all meditation techniques. No matter what you do, where you do it
or how you do it, there is always someone in you who
watches the doer as well as the deed. You can experience this in many
ways. While watching a movie try to see if it is only you who is
watching the movie or is there someone in you who is watching that you
are watching the movie. ( I have already explained this in What
is meditation )To know that knower is the
real meditation. That knower, that particular watcher - the witness is your true
self. This self is your eternal essence. If there is any part of you
which was present before your birth and which will be there after your
death, it is this self - your true identity. Always meditate with an aim
to know this self.
